Who we are

Better Steps Learning was created to support workers who support others.

Our founder, a community services practitioner with over a decade of experience in family violence, saw a gap in training that truly addressed the day-to-day challenges of working with men who use violence, without jargon, and without being detached from the realities of practice.

Backed by over 20 years of combined experience in the community health sector, our team brings practical insight to every course we design. Each module is grounded in evidence-based frameworks but stays focused on what works in real conversations, care coordination, and crisis moments.

Better Steps Learning gives you tools you can actually use… whether you're just starting out, building confidence in this space, or looking to sharpen your practice.

Why Choose Us?

Better Steps Learning courses provide relevant, practice-focused PD that services can incorporate into their annual workforce development planning.

Under the Victorian MBCP Minimum Standards, facilitators and family safety contact workers are required to undertake ongoing professional development each year.

At Better Steps Learning, we are committed to supporting practitioners and organisations working with men who use family violence to deliver safe, accountable, and effective practice. Our courses are developed by experienced frontline practitioners and grounded in evidence-informed frameworks, ensuring learners gain practical skills they can apply immediately.

We align our training with leading practice standards, including the Victorian Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP) Minimum Standards and the MARAM Framework. This ensures that our courses:

  • Support workforce capability in responding to the dynamics and impacts of domestic, family, and sexual violence

  • Provide relevant professional development that can contribute to the annual PD expectations for facilitators and family safety contact workers

  • Strengthen practitioner confidence in managing high-risk situations, resistance, and complex presentations

  • Complement supervision and organisational governance, helping teams maintain consistent, accountable practice

Better Steps Learning is designed for busy practitioners and organisations who need practical, evidence-based training that fits into real-world service contexts. By connecting learning to current frameworks and standards, we help practitioners enhance their skills, improve outcomes for families, and maintain professional excellence.

Our mission:

To make professional development accessible, relevant, and directly applicable, so that practitioners can work safely, confidently, and ethically with men who use violence.
